AM marches against school closure

On Friday, the 31st of March, Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas backed the parents of Carwe school children in their fight to keep their local community school from closure. Many of the parents have recently created a pressure group called 'Llais Carwe Voice' with the intention of campaigning for their school to be kept open. Under current proposals by Carmarthenshire County Council, Carwe School will close in 2010.

Mr Thomas said:

"I marched on the protest with Carwe parents to offer them my unequivocal support. Carwe is a very close community village and the school plays an essential part in that network. In some cases I can see the reasoning behind the closures of village schools, but I believe that Carwe makes a very strong case against the one size fits all mentality. Each rural closure should be viewed on its individual merits. Carwe School is the heart of its community and I will be fighting against its closure."

Ruth Thomas, chairperson of Llais Carwe added:

"We will be launched our campaign against the closure of Carwe School on Friday. We are very glad of the support we have received from people and societies throughout Carmarthenshire. We hope that the campaign will now be taken up by other schools that are under threat. The County Council are currently acting undemocratically and are unwilling to discuss the matter. However, we will not give up until we know that our schools are safe."
