Plaid AM backs farmers campaign
Rhodri Glyn Thomas has echoed calls to for large supermarkets to provide better deals to ensure a future for Welsh milk producers. The Plaid Assembly Member spoke following an announcement by the Farmers Union of Wales that leading supermarket Tesco has been challenged by Welsh milk producers to share its record profits with dairy farmers.
Mr Thomas said:
"I'm backing the FUW and Welsh milk producer's calls for more balanced profit sharing. There is huge pressure on small scale dairy farmers. With the current system the future of welsh dairy farmers is critical."
Mr Thomas added:
"It's important that there is a safeguarding of this industry. The dairy farming industry in Wales is vitally important and will have a knock on effect on many other businesses. Carmarthenshire is one of many areas that will suffer if a fairer percentage of profits are not given to milk producers in this county and across Wales."
